How long I've used it — and what I actually use it for

I'm not reviewing this from a free trial. I've been on ChatGPT since the day it launched — November 30, 2022 — and I've used it almost every day since. Three-plus years in, it's woven into how I run everything.

The best way I can explain it: I don't treat ChatGPT like a search box. I treat it like three employees I never have to pay — a business brain, a creative director, and a tech assistant. Here's the actual breakdown of how I use it:

What it's genuinely great at

2. The creative and image side is genuinely powerful. I lean on it constantly for brand campaigns, editorial visuals, mood and photo direction. For a small operation, having a creative director on tap that can generate and iterate on visuals in seconds is a real edge.

3. It's a thinking partner for strategy, not just a task-doer. The moment it earned its keep wasn't a task — it was a conversation. I went down a deep rabbit hole on marketing with it, and it handed me points of view I genuinely found groundbreaking. That kind of back-and-forth, where it pushes your thinking instead of just answering, is where the paid models pull ahead.

Where it falls short

Honesty is the whole point of this site, so here are the real gripes.

It assumes instead of asking. This is my biggest frustration by far. When a request is even slightly ambiguous, ChatGPT doesn't stop to ask what I meant — it just decides it knows what I want and runs with it. When it guesses right, great. When it guesses wrong, it's committed to the wrong direction, and it's genuinely hard to walk it back. A good collaborator asks a clarifying question; ChatGPT usually doesn't.

It's confident even when it's wrong. The flip side of that eagerness is that it states things with total certainty whether or not it should. You can't fully outsource your judgment to it — you're still the editor, the fact-checker, and the one who catches when it's confidently off. For business-critical work, never ship its output unread.

Who should pay for it — and who shouldn't

Pay for it if you run a business of any kind. This is the clearest case. Plus helps you build what I call your "business brain" — it makes it easy to reach into parts of your business you'd otherwise never touch. The blogging example is the perfect one: an entire area of my business that wouldn't exist without it. If AI output touches your revenue, your content, or your decisions, $20 is not a real cost.

Pay for it if you do creative work. The image generation, voice, and creative direction alone justify it.

Skip it if you just use it as a search engine. If you're only poking around for answers, what you're doing doesn't affect your finances, and you'd rather keep the $20 — there's genuinely no point. Stay on the free tier (or look at the cheaper Go plan if you just want higher limits without ads). Be honest about which camp you're in.

The bottom line

ChatGPT Plus is the rare $20 that quietly makes me money instead of costing me. The value is very justified for what you get back, especially once you stop treating it like a chatbot and set it up like an imperfect business partner that actually helps you get things done. Three years in, it's still the first tab I open.
